Today you will look for a source about your chosen topic. Remember, you cannot use google as your search engine. Focus on news websites and online databases (think EBSCO, etc.)
After you have found and read one source, answer the following questions:
1. What is the URL for this source?
2. What is the correct MLA works cited citation for this source?
3. What did this source say about your chosen topic?
4. Is this a reliable source? Will you use this source?
1. http://www.cnn.com/2010/LIVING/04/26/drinking.teens.parents/index.html
ReplyDelete2. Hanna, Jason. "Let Teens Drink? Parents Wrestle with the Question." CNN. Cable
News Network, 26 Apr. 2010. Web. 04 Nov. 2015.
3. This source says many things that are relevant to the topic of Underage Drinking. One of the biggest things that stands out to me is the story about a boy named Casey who died of alcohol poisoning. Many people do not understand the severity of alcohol poisoning until they are sick with it, and they do not realize that it can lead to death. Another thing that stood out was that about a quarter of Americans ages 12-20 drank at least once in a certain month's period. That's a lot of people drinking underage and all of them can be negatively impacted from the alcohol.
4. This is a reliable source. It is an article from CNN. I plan on using this source. It is a great example of one of the results of underage drinking.
http://www.cnn.com/2015/11/03/world/syria-cages-human-shields/index.html
ReplyDelete"Syria Rebels Use Government Soldiers, Loyalists as Human Shields - CNN.com." CNN. Cable News Network, 03 Nov. 2015. Web. 04 Nov. 2015.
How brutal the war is really getting, it is showing that the rebels are using captured government soldiers as human shields to fend off attacks.
Yes I will use this source as it is CNN and is very reliable.
1. http://www.cnn.com/2015/04/17/living/parents-movement-opt-out-of-testing-feat/index.html
ReplyDelete2. Wallace, Kelly. "Parents 'opting Out' of Standardized Testing - CNN.com." CNN. Cable News Network, 24 Apr. 2015. Web. 04 Nov. 2015.
3. The source talked about how since more and more parents around the US are fed up and disappointed with how standardized testing is going, they are pulling their children out and not letting them take the tests.
4. This source should be reliable since it is from CNN. I probably will consider using this source since I think it has a great argument.
1. What is the URL for this source?
ReplyDeletehttp://www.bbc.com/news/health-26952394
2. What is the correct MLA works cited citation for this source?
Briggs, Helen. "'Selfie' Body Image Warning Issued." BBC News. N.p., 10 Apr. 2014. Web. 4 Nov. 2015.
3. What did this source say about your chosen topic?
This source talks about how social media and people who use social media more are more likely to have body image issues. It also talks about how women are more likely to have their body image affected by social media than men.
4. Is this a reliable source? Will you use this source?
This is a relatable source because it is from the BBC which is a very credible news site. Yes, I will use this sources because it gives a lot of information about body image that is specific to the area of media and social media which is the more in-depth topic I am choosing to write about.
1. http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/08/politics/congress-gun-laws-democrats/index.html
ReplyDelete2. Barrett, Ted. "Gun Control: Democrats Urge Americans to Demand Congress Pass Legislation - CNNPolitics.com." CNN. Cable News Network, 09 Oct. 2015. Web. 04 Nov. 2015.
3. This source gave background about the topic and some of what the democrats and republicans want done.
4. Yes, this is a reliable source because it is from CNN. I will use this because I like the comparison between the democrats and republicans.
1. http://uanews.org/story/exploring-the-negative-consequences-of-stereotyping
ReplyDelete2. UA News Services. "Exploring the Negative Consequences of Stereotyping." UANews. N.p., 20 Nov. 2003. Web. 04 Nov. 2015.
3. This source discusses the negative effects that racial stereotypes have on people and society. It gives examples of typical racial stereotypes and then discusses how they have negative side effects on the group of people that it is targeting.
4. I will use this website in my research paper because it is a reliable source and talks about my topic in a way that can connect with readers. This is reliable because it was written by a group of people who did extensive research on this topic and then presented their information in an article.
1.) http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/kamilah-brock-nypd-bmw_55f2c9aae4b063ecbfa3e60d
ReplyDelete2.) Mathias, Christopher. "Woman Says She Endured 8 Days In Psych Ward Because Cops Didn't Believe BMW Was Hers." The Huffington Post. N.p., 22 Sept. 2015. Web. 4 Nov. 2015.
3.) This source describes a woman who was targetted by her race, just because she drives a BMW. The police officer pulled her over for not having her hands on the steering wheel at a stop light, she was taken to the station, and was not released for 8 days, and endured emotional trauma. They gave her all sorts of drugs to try and prove that she was dilusional, and had bipolar disorder, which she didn't actually have. She was being targetted for her race because they didn't believe that she was a professional banker, owned a BMW, and Barack Obama follows her on twitter.
4.) This source is reliable, and I will use this source because for my essay I'm going to need a lot of different stories about police brutality in the media. Even though this women didn't get beaten or hurt, she still was mentally abused by these law enforcement officers, and the hospital for being injected with powerful sedatives, and was forced to take doces of lithium.
1. http://time.com/4092254/heather-cook-maryland-dui/
ReplyDelete2. Jenkins, Nash. "Bishop Who Drunkenly Killed Cyclist Will Serve Seven Years." Time. Time, 29 Oct. 2015. Web. 04 Nov. 2015.
3. This source shows how people are not mentally aware when they are driving under the influence. In this article you have a high-ranking bishop that kills a bicyclist and does not even have the recollection that it happens. If Heather Cook had not been almost three times over the legal drinking limit then Thomas Palermo, the victim, most likely would still be alive and raising his two children. This source shows that people can kill others, be texting and driving, and be three times over the legal limit and only get sentenced to seven years in prison.
4. This is a reliable source because it is an article from TIME magazine. I think that I will use this source since it is a good example of someone hurting another person due to the fact that they were over the legal drinking limit.
http://www.cnn.com/2014/08/12/opinion/baez-police-garner-michael-brown-chokehold/
ReplyDeleteBaez, Iris. "Are the Police Getting Away with Murder?" CNN. Cable News Network, Web. 04 Nov. 2015.
My source said that the killing of an unarmed black man named Mike Brown was unjustified and the cop deserves to be put in jail. The killing of Mr.Brown brought to life more killings of unarmed black men. This shows that the police are abusing their power.
This is a reliable source, even tho it is very biased. CNN is more liberal and may have a liberal opinion. I will use this source because it contains facts and CNN is a nation news network so I do not think it would make up facts.
1. http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/02/us/airport-security-investigation/index.html
ReplyDelete2. Zamost, Scott, Drew Griffin, and Curt Devine. "Airports Security Gap? Most Workers Not Screened Daily - CNN.com." CNN. Cable News Network, 3 Feb. 2015. Web. 04 Nov. 2015.
3. My topic is about airport security gap and the controversy that comes along with it. The source says that only two of America’s major airports require employees to go through a daily security screening. There are no federal requirements that make airport employees that have access to the aircraft and other secure areas to get screened like passengers do. The most that will happen to them is they will get a background check before getting the job and they may get randomly screened while working. It is an issue that employees who have access to all parts of the airport do not have to go through security like passengers do.
4. This is a reliable source because it is from CNN, it is a real news story. I will probably use this source for my essay because it goes into depth about a major security gap in airports and mentions the dangers of this security gap.

3) In some countries like Africa and some parts of Asia children only get a average of 2$ a day to spend on food, and for many of them that is not enough.Because there economy is this bad it is juts getting worse and worse leaving children with out the normal amount of food supply.
4) Yes i will use this source because it is a reliable source used by CNN
1.) http://go.galegroup.com/ps/retrieve.do?sort=RELEVANCE&inPS=true&prodId=GVRL&userGroupName=libe91209&tabID=T003&searchId=R4&resultListType=RESULT_LIST&contentSegment=&searchType=BasicSearchForm¤tPosition=7&contentSet=GALE%7CCX2588700149&&docId=GALE|CX2588700149&docType=GALE

3.) This source went in depth about the controversy of gay couples and how this has impacted our society as a whole. It talked about how gay couples were viewed historically and how they’re viewed today. They addressed both sides of the argument, why gays should or shouldn’t be accepted into our society, and they gave valid reasons from a political and social standpoint. This source also mentioned the controversy of gay marriage and reasons why this issue should be considered important.
4.) Yes, this is reliable because it isn't very biased and it was taken from a textual source. I will most likely use this in my essay because it offers a lot of information and ideas that may help my own argument.
1) http://www.cnn.com/2015/08/07/opinions/arnold-police-shootings/index.html
ReplyDelete2) "Police Brutality: The Real Whistle-blower - CNN.com." CNN. Cable News Network, n.d. Web. 04 Nov. 2015.
3) This source was gave some very important personal thoughts on why people think that this is an issue and how they thought that this problem came to the surface. They think that this needs to come to an end because there is no reasoning for all of this happening. The reason on why people think that this issue came to surface was from the help of social media. If it wasn’t for Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram then many of people would still be getting targeted for innocent reasons.
4) Yes, this source is a reliable source. For my paper, I will use this source because it fits the requirements of a reliable source as well as it gives off information that will be very helpful for this paper.
http://everytownresearch.org/school-shootings/
ReplyDelete"The Long, Shameful List of School Shootings in America."EverytownResearch.org. Everytown for Gun Safety, 03 Oct. 2015. Web. 04 Nov. 2015.
This article talks about how parents shouldn’t be scared to send their children to school, but since 2013, there have been 156 school shootings, which averages to 1 a week. In the single school district of Washington, DC, there were 336 gun shots in a school vicinity over a one school year. I think it's a reliable source because it’s a .org, and I will probably use this because they give good information and support what I’m trying to say throughout my paper.
1. http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/06/09/sleep.deprivation.depression/index.html
ReplyDelete2. Harding, Anne, and Copyright Health Magazine 2011. "Sleep Deprivation Linked to Depression in Teens." CNN. Cable News Network, 09 June 2010. Web. 04 Nov. 2015.
3. Although this is more about sleep deprivation than depression, the article even says they go hand in hand. Sleep deprivation will be a strong point of mine in my essay; students are pressured to do too much outside of the immense amounts of homework they get, and then they are required to wake up early and do it all over again which can easily cause sleep deprivation which can cause/can be caused by depression. It said that it is unclear which way the relationship goes, but for my argument it essentially works both ways. The article continues to say that these students that are sleep deprived are much more likely than their well-rested peers to be depressed (or showing symptoms).
4. This source is reliable, it is from CNN. Plus, in the source it addresses that even though the study was small, there is strong evidence that similar patterns will be found among other high schools. So, although it may not be the most reliable (because the study was small), I intend to use it because there is the strong evidence to support the idea that sleep deprivation and depression are linked throughout the US high schools.
http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/21/politics/gun-control-poll-americans/index.html
ReplyDeleteDiamond, Jeremy. "Poll: More Americans Oppose Stricter Gun Control - CNNPolitics.com." CNN. Cable News Network, 21 Oct. 2015. Web. 04 Nov. 2015.
This source used a statistic gathered from a poll to argue that more Americans oppose stricter gun control than are for it. It has good statistics in regards to locations of the people being polled and the ethnicity of those submitting the polls. It also includes statistics in regard to the different beliefs of political parties. I would say that this is a pretty reliable source considering it is from a national news broadcaster. Though there may be some biased, I would say it is reliable. I may end up using this in my final paper as well.
1. http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/28/opinion/mills-cheating/index.html
ReplyDelete2. "SAT Scandal Shows Tyranny of Standardized Testing - CNN.com." CNN.
Cable News Network, n.d. Web. 04 Nov. 2015.
3. The basis of this source goes along with my opinion of standardized testing. Many prestigous schools find that "the best" students are the one's who submit the highest ACT or SAT score. In reality, that score means nothing. It reveals more about the students economic and racial background. There is no way that standarized testing can be dimminished completaly, but they could be weighted less during the application process. There are multiple steps a college could take to make these changes.
4. I got this source from CNN, meaning, it is very reliable. I will definatly use this source for my essay!
1. http://www.bbc.com/news/health-34696492
ReplyDelete2. "Mental Health Campaign 'will Combat Stigma' - BBC News." BBC News. N.p., 2 Nov. 2015. Web. 04 Nov. 2015
3. It talked about how people with mental illness often don’t get the same rights as people without mental illness. Also how many people would rather not talk about this problem because people don’t like to speak up instead they would rather run away from their problems. Another problems with mental illness is how people don’t take it as seriously as any other illness which makes people with mental illness feel like they don’t need help.
4. This is a reliable source, but I most likely won’t use it because I have other sources that I liked more and are more on topic of what I am looking for.
1. http://americangovernment.abc-clio.com/Search/Display/196492?terms=prejudice+
ReplyDelete2. "Rodney King." American Government. ABC-CLIO, 2015. Web. 4 Nov. 2015.
3. This source gave a good example of prejudice some people in power, like police have. It shows how the world saw this act by only seeing part of the video, and how they said he only suffered minor bruising, both showing prejudice for both sides. It also showed how the trial was all white, and biased towards the case in law. Court cases are supposed to be unbiased but you could easily use this source to prove that not all things are fair when prejudice is involved.
4. Yes this source is from ABC-CLIO, so it is a very reliable source. I think I could use this source when explaining how prejudice government, and the law can be. I could use it to show that not only people in every day life can be biased, but so are people in power, and their decisions can have huge consequences on peoples lives.
http://www.dailypioneer.com/columnists/oped/cruelty-in-various-forms-of-captivity.html
ReplyDeleteKarlekar, Hiranmay. "CRUELTY IN VARIOUS FORMS OF CAPTIVITY." The Pioneer. The Pioneer, n.d. Web. 04 Nov. 2015.
In this source, the author talks about the cruelty of zoos. He states that, “ While humans can move out of their houses and travel within and among cities, they remain confined to their cages, which are worse than prison cells, all the time.” (Karlekar 1) Within the confines of a cage, animals live lives that are literally unnatural. They cannot roam free as they wish and there food is made for them and fed to them. They are unable to interact with other animals as they would be in the wild. Many animals are put into dull isolation and are completely unhappy.
This source is probably not very credible. There is a tremendous amount of bias and I have never heard of The Pioneer before. I doubt I will use it.

ReplyDelete2. Gibson, Megan. "One Fashion Brand Takes the 'No Photoshop Pledge,' Who's Next." TIME. Time Inc, 19 August 2014. Web. 4 November 2015.
3. The article describes how the company ModCloth signed a pledge to not photoshop their models. It demonstrates how people need to stop retouching models and appreciate natural body images.
4. This is a reliable source and I plan to use it because it helps develop my argument.
1. http://time.com/4053715/planned-parenthood-video-cecile-richards-congress/
ReplyDelete2. Beckwith, Ryan Teague. "Planned Parenthood Head Defends Fetal Tissue Research Before Congress." Time 29 Sept. 2015: n. pag. Web.
3. What did this source say about your chosen topic?
This article said that the head of Planned Parenthood told congress and other people that the videos released of Planned Parenthood selling aborted fetal tissue for profit was "discredited, doctored, and designed to smear Planned Parenthood". The people who released the video were antiabortionists who wanted to get rid of Planned Parenthood. She also said that Planned Parenthood does do research on fetal tissue for health reasons like potential lifesaving research.
4.This is a reliable source and I will use it because it provides good reliable information.
1. http://edition.cnn.com/2015/04/21/us/nypd-training-racial-profiling/index.html
ReplyDelete2. Ly, Laura. "Proposed NYPD Training Targets Racial Profiling - CNN.com." CNN. Cable News Network, 21 Apr. 2015. Web. 04 Nov. 2015.
3. This article touches on the usage of racial profiling in police-criminal encounters. It states that racial profiling is illegal and discouraged in the department and violates several moral and ethical principles.
4. I believe it is a reliable source due to its lack of obvious bias. It states universal views on what should be correct and the actions they are taking to follow through (more factual than opinion based).
1. http://www.gallup.com/poll/184346/sanders-surges-clinton-sags-favorability.aspx?g_source=&g_medium=&g_campaign=tiles
ReplyDelete2. Saad, Lydia. "Sanders Surges, Clinton Sags in U.S. Favorability." Gallup.com. Gallup Inc., 24 July 2015. Web. 04 Nov. 2015.
3.This source stated that Donald Trump have high disapproval ratings as opposed to Marco Rubio and Ben Carson who are positive in their favorability ratings.
4. Gallup is definitely a reliable source and I plan on using this info in my research. I choose to include it because Carson and Rubio are known for not attacking others and Trump is definitely known for attacking others.
1. The URL is http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/29839317
ReplyDelete2. MLA works cited: "Helen Grant Wants More Women to Play Sport and Close Gender Gap." BBC. N.p., 30 Oct. 2014. Web. 4 Nov. 2015.
3. This article described that although a record number of women are involved in sports, there is still 2 million more men than women participating in athletics. It also outlined various reasons for this: the belief that sports are just unfeminine and that women belong in the home and not on the field and that young women feel judged when playing sports. The article went on to describe some ways that groups are trying to close this gap such as media campaigns focused on empowering women. Along with the unequal ratio of men to women in sports, the article also stated that there is also inequality in the amount of money women and men athletes get payed.
4. This is a reliable source. BBC is known as a reliable news site that reports on a wide variety of topics and offers little bias. I plan on using this source for my paper because it gives both causes and solutions to the issue I'm researching as well as addition information on the topic that I can include to make my essay as strong as possible.
1. http://www.cnn.com/2014/05/07/living/race-sterling-identity/index.html.
ReplyDelete2. Sen, Rinku, and The Opinions Expressed in This Commentary Are Solely Those of Rinku Sen. "A Sterling Solution: Start Talking Honestly about Race." CNN. Cable News Network, 07 May 2014. Web. 04 Nov. 2015.
3. This source was talking about the racial remarks made by the LA Clipper's owner Donald Sterling. Sterling was caught on tape making a series of racially offensive remarks that were captured by his girlfriend. It was at this time that the NBA started an investigation to see what was exactly said and determine Sterling's future with the NBA.
4. This source is credible since it doesn't give any biased opinions on the topic. It reads very directly allowing the reader to follow the arguments very clearly. Overall it was very well written.
1. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/1953425.stm
ReplyDelete2. "History of School Shootings." BBC News. BBC, 26 Apr. 2002. Web. 04 Nov. 2015.
3. This source lists some of the worst school shootings from 1997 to 2002. It shows that school shootings aren't solely a US problem(or weren't as this is over a decade old). Since both Germany and the US were very prevalent on the list, I should research if Germany has changed anything and if so what affect it has had on their statistics.
4. This source is from BBC and doesn't try to push any political agenda on gun control so I find it very reliable. I would probably use this source on my essay if I was able to find a source regarding any reform in Germany as that would probably help support my main idea of supporting gun control.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/us-climate-report-says-global-warming-impact-already-severe/2014/05/06/0e82cd3c-d49c-11e3-aae8-c2d44bd79778_story.html
ReplyDeleteFears, Darryl. "U.S. Climate Report Says Global Warming Impact Already Severe." The Washington Post. N.p., 7 May 2014. Web. 4 Nov. 2015.
This sources told me that global warming is in full effect right now and it has way more effects than just melting of the ice caps. It is causing a rise in sea levels, extreme droughts, tropical storms and increased temperatures. 2012 was the hottest year on average ever record. This source also explains how action must be taken now otherwise temperature will rise 10 degrees by the end of the century. This source is very reliable considering it is coming from the Washington Post. I will definitely use this source in my essay because it covers the main ideas that my social issue is able.
http://www.scmp.com/tech/science-research/article/1875333/beam-hope-thermal-reactor-breakthrough-beijing-may-help-china
ReplyDeleteChen, Stephen. "Beyond the China Syndrome: Thermal Reactor Breakthrough in Beijing Could End Nuclear Waste Problem and Remove Meltdown Threat." South China Morning Post. South China Morning Post, 04 Nov. 2015. Web. 04 Nov. 2015.
This source describes how China is devoting many resources towards the advancement of their nuclear energies programs. They are aiming to generate a usable energy source out of nuclear fission rather than just radioactive isotopes. This would be considerably safer and generate energy from a relatively unlimited supply. This relates to my topic because I believe all countries that can spare the expense should be devoting equal if not more resources towards advancing their nuclear energies programs as it is will be necessary in a few years, better for the environment if fission is optimized, and numerous other reasons that make it better than fossil fuel energies.
This source comes from a major news source in China that is credible. There doesn't appear to be bias or falsified information nor any real incentive to post such information on this website because it is only refering to China's plans and announcements and nothing absurd such as they perfected nuclear fission this morning. As of right now I can see a place where this source and others like it could be used and be helpful to my paper, so I will save it and most likely implement it in my paper.

3. This source said that prison reform was necessary and that it will hopefully happen soon. The author talks about how one of the largest problems is the amount of prisoners who re-offend after being released and how some relatively simple solutions are available. He claims that if prisoner's had access to business or vocational training, they would not re-offend because studies have shown that most re-offend because of financial hardships that having access to a steady job would solve.
4. This is a reliable source because it comes from a credible news site. I will use this source because it provides a unique viewpoint as well as several thought out opinions in terms of solutions and why they would work.

It also mentions that the stress from abuse early in life can also result in an inability to cope with stress later in life. This sometimes causes them to be more vulnerable to developing chronic diseases as well.

4.It is a reliable source and I will probably use it in my article.
