After you are finished reading, please comment on this blog in 100-150 words. Make sure you tell me which articles you read and what type of organization for each is. Then, write which one you enjoyed more and why.
The two articles I read were "Little Change in Opinion on Global Warming" and "Compare 5 Top Scholarship Search Engines." "Global Warming" was organized as a topic by topic essay, talking about different opinions by category on a poll whereas "Scholarships" was organized subject by subject, having each change be by search engine. I preferred the essay on scholarship search engines more than I did the one on global warming. In the case of this essay, having subject by subject organization made it easier to read. I also enjoyed it more because it was information that I could connect to more and it helped me more than the essay on global warming did.
ReplyDeleteThe article “An Amazing Journey: 100 Years in America” is organized topic by topic as it takes the reader through the various locations in New York City comparing them to what they would have looked like in 1900. In contrast, the article “Compare 5 Top Scholarship Search Engines” is organized subject by subject because it breaks the scholarship websites down separately from one another. I enjoyed the essay on the scholarship search engines more than the article on New York because it was more relevant to my life today. I also liked that the scholarship essay was broken up into smaller chunks because it allowed for easier reading. Even if I was not going through the scholarship search process right now I believe that the article would still be more enjoyable because I am not interested in the history of New York.
ReplyDeleteSimilar to what I said in my post, I would definitely agree with the your statement on how the article about scholarship search engines is more relevant in our lives today, compared to the article about New York in the early 1900s. I also liked your point on how the scholarship article was an easier read because it was broken up into chunks, unlike the other article which was just one big boring blob of text. I feel that in order to write a successful article, you have to remember that less is more and to not lose your reader's interest with too much text.
DeleteI read the Chicago cubs Vs the pittsburgh pirates article, and the Amazing journey article, the chicago cubs article Was written in a point by point format because they are just talking about one game but giving perspectives from both teams. They Amazing journey article is written in a Subject by subject format because They switch off talking about how life is now compared to how life was back then in 1900. The article i liked the best was the cubs vs pirates because it is more convienent to me because it is being played later tonight, And because the cubs have not been in the playoffs in over 80 years so you dont see this very often with the cubs. Also in the article they said the cubs are predicted to win, 3-0 witch is good because i want the cubs to win.
ReplyDeleteI chose to read the articles about “The Little Changes in Opinion on Global Warming” and the “Hollywood Gender Gap.” The first article was about how over the years, the public’s idea about Global Warming has changed drastically. It offered statistics and points of observation in the percentages that were recorded for categories. Because of this, it was written in Point-by-Point format to properly compare these changes. Personally, I really liked reading about the Hollywood Gender Gap than the article about Global Warming. I’m a huge fan for actors and Hollywood movies so it was very interesting for me to read, and I could agree with the statistics as well. This article was written in Point-by-Point format because this article compared young actresses to older actors, and then older actresses to young actors using graphs that they comprised from over 6,000 Hollywood stars over the years. It’s stated in the article that actresses will reach the peak in their acting career earlier than actors, and while men may continue to increase with age, women will tend to decrease.
ReplyDeleteThe two articles that I read were “An Amazing Journey: 100 Year in America” and “Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates”. In the article “An Amazing Journey: 100 Year in America”, the structure of this article is a subject by subject. The other article that I read, “Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates”, was a topic by topic comparison. After reading both of these essays, I liked the article “Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates” more because it is something that I can relate to. They talked a lot about the pitching, especially having Jake Arrieta doing as well as he is these past couple months. I can relate to that because I am a Cubs fan so it is fun to see someone in the franchise do extremely well and also I am a pitcher. Me being a pitcher it is cool to see how the Pirates want to skeem their play around him. This article also interests me because this is the first time in a while that the Cubs are this far, so it gives me some other knowledge about the two teams and the game that I did not know.
ReplyDeleteI read both of these articles too and I agree with you because I am also a Cubs fan so I can enjoy reading about how the Cubs are doing better than usual and that they finally have a chance. Also I agree because I like how this article gave me background knowledge of the other team that I did not know before reading this article. While the history essay was interesting, the Cubs article was in my opinion, much better to read and was more interesting to me.
DeleteThe articles I read were "Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates" and "An Amazing Journey: 100 Years in America." The Cubs vs. Pirates article was subject by subject organization because each paragraph was either about the Cubs or the Pirates. One paragraph would talk about the Cubs and another would then go on to talk about the Pirates. However, in the "100 Years" article, the organization was topic by topic. In this article, each paragraph would talk about specific things form that time, and then specific things from 100 years ago. It was not organized like a subject by subject piece where each paragraph focused on one of the views.
ReplyDeleteI read the History article and the Cubs vs Pirates article. In the history article, it was set up as a topic by topic essay. The author would pick and write about a topic and in that paragraph would talk about New York City in the 1900s and compare and contrast it to today's city. In the article about the Cubs and the Pirates, the author sets it up as a subject by subject article. The author of this article begins to talk about both of them and then talks about the Cubs and their strengths and weaknesses, and then the Pirates and their strengths and weaknesses. In between his paragraphs, it will compare and contrast both of them and talk about something they have in common. I personally liked reading the Cubs vs. Pirates article more than the history article because of the way it was set up and due to the fact that I enjoy reading about the Cubs more than I like reading about NYC in the 1900s. I believe that reading subject by subject essays sound better than topic by topic essays.
ReplyDeleteArticles I Read:
ReplyDeleteAn Amazing Journey: 100 Years in America
Compare 5 Top Scholarship Search Engines
In the Article “An Amazing Journey: 100 Years in America, the author compares an area of New York in the early 1900s to today. The organization that was used in this article to compare the two aspects of the topic was a mix of point by point and subject by subject. In the article “Compare 5 Top Scholarship Search Engines”, the author talks about 5 different databases where students can find scholarships to apply for. The author goes further into detail of each search engine and gives the reader pros and cons of each one. The organization of this article is subject by subject. The article I enjoyed reading more was the article on the scholarship search engines because I felt like it was more worth my time to read, unlike the other article that really didn’t pertain to my interest. Also the history article comparing New York in two time periods really was a no brainer because of course it has changed since the early 1900s, so I felt like I was reading information I already knew, unlike the other article which was new information.
I read the same articles that you did and enjoyed the college article more as well so it is interesting to see that we looked at the articles in pretty much the same way. I like your point that the city obviously has to change since it has been such a long time since I think many people brush by that fact even though it is quite evident. I could not imagine if a city stayed the same for over one hundred years while the rest of the world is rapidly advancing. I also agree with your idea that the scholarship website was more entertaining because it was more worth the time spent reading it do to the stage that we are in with high school and college. However, do you think you would have the same opinion over these two articles if you were not a senior in college searching for scholarships?
DeleteThe two articles I read were "An amazing journey: 100 years in america" and "Chicago cubs vs. Pittsburgh pirates". "An amazing journey: 100 years in america" and "Chicago cubs vs. Pittsburgh pirates" were both organized Topic by Topic. I enjoyed the "An amazing journey: 100 years in america" because it was very interesting to learn about how things change throughout history. For example I like the story about how one neighborhood was really bad and then got better throughout time and the school system got better and less people did drugs. I enjoy learning about history and I absolutely hate baseball because it is boring.
ReplyDeleteThings I read
ReplyDeleteAn Amazing Journey: 100 Years in America
Chicago Cubs vs Pittsburgh Pirates
I read the article about the New York family who lives in a house today and 100 years before that. The other article I read was about the Cubs vs Pirates prediction for the wildcard playoffs that is beginning this week. Over all I would say both are Topic by Topic, the 100 years article is kind of hard to distinguish it though as it is very subtle. Most of the paper was about the guy who lived there 100 years ago, there wasn't really much about the modern day guy as you got further in the paper. It would just talk about one thing about that section of NYC and the guy who lived 100 years ago might recognize it today. The baseball article was super easy to distinguish between as they were comparing pitchers to pitchers, batters to batters, and then statistics. Which is definatly topic by topic. Overall I enjoyed the baseball article more than the 100 years ago article it was interesting seeing the teams being placed head to head and the statistics that separated them.
I read the “Little Change in Opinions about Global Warming”, and the “Chicago Cubs vs Pittsburgh Pirates”. The “Little Change in Opinions about Global Warming” is topic by topic because of the way they talked about each topic on the poll, and “Chicago Cubs vs Pittsburgh Pirates” is subject by subject, because they would talk about either the Cubs or the Pirates . I liked the “Chicago Cubs vs Pittsburgh Pirates” article better because I’m not very interested in science so the other article was boring, but I like baseball so that's why i chose this essay. Even though I ‘m a White Sox fan, it was interesting to read all about the Cubs and what success they’ve had this year, and how they could advance to the World Series if they beat the Pirates, compared to all of the years before when they haven’t been very good.
ReplyDeleteI read the articles "Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates" and "Hollywood Gender Gap". "Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates" was organized subject by ubject. It split ups its paragraphs to talk about the pitchers for each team. "Hollywood gender Gap" was organized topic by topic. It talked about specific examples of the gender gap in Hollywood and then talked about why this gender gap is occurring in the next paragraph. I enjoyed the articles about the baseball game tonight more because I am a big Cubs fan and it was interesting to here about the game tonight. I also know a lot more information about baseball than I do about gender gaps in Hollywood. It was also easier to follow and understand the baseball article because of how it was organized. The article about the Gender Gap seemed like all the information was just mashed together into a couple paragraphs.
ReplyDeleteI read from category one “Little Change in Opinion on Global Warming” and from category two “Compare 5 Top Scholarship Search Engines”. Category one article “Little Change in Opinion on Global Warming” was Topic by Topic, it got confusing at times because it stated a lot of opinions and you tend to forget who believes what due to their way of organization. Category two article “Compare 5 Top Scholarship Search Engines” was much nicer with the understanding of what each search engine provided. The reason why I enjoyed reading the Category two article “Compare 5 Top Scholarship Search Engines” was because the organization was much neater due to subject by subject comparing. None of the info was scrambling around or confusing because it was directly under the subject.
ReplyDeleteThe first article I read was “Little Change in Opinion on Global warming”. This article about global warming is organized in a topic-by-topic manner. It talked about each way that views on global warming have changed over the years and split each point by partisan differences in opinion about each point. I thought this was an intelligent way to organize this essay because it separated the different problems in the environment and showed helpful graphs on how each party felt about each of the problems. The second article I read was “Hollywood’s Gender Gap”, it was organized in a topic-by-topic fashion, comparing younger actors to older actors and describing the differences in careers whether these young or old actors are male or female. I liked this article more because it entertaining for me to read and it was less confusing and more straightforward.
ReplyDeleteI read “Hollywood Gender Gap” and “Little Change in Opinions on Global Warming”. “Hollywood Gender Gap” was topic by topic and “Little Change” was subject by subject. I really enjoyed both of these articles but I think that the Hollywood article was more entertaining. I liked that they showed graphs and had links to other websites. They were talking about relevant actors and actresses which is nice because sometimes when you read about people that you don’t know, it can get to be very boring. I also liked what they were saying in the article. They said that many women have their acting peak by the time they are 30, while most men don’t hit their peak until they are in their 50’s. I think that it’s unfair that a women’s careers can only go so far, and then they stopped getting hired. I would like to see women acting careers continue into their older years in the future.
ReplyDeleteI think it is interesting that we both read the same two articles but enjoyed different articles. But now reading your points, I understand why you like the Hollywood article better, because even though as I said I didn't care for the Hollywood article because it did not affect me personally, I see how you feel about the female actors. They should also get a fair chance in having roles when they are older just like men.
DeleteFrom category one, I read "An Amazing Journey: 100 Years in America." This article is organized in a "topic by topic" style. It goes through what is was like to live in the Lower East Side of New York City 100 years ago, and what it is like in more recent times. It goes in chronological order by paragraph. From category two, I read "Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates." This is organized in a subject by subject style. It goes through each team's strengths and weaknesses and predicts who will win. I enjoyed reading the "Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates" article the most. I am interested in sports and look forward to playoff baseball. While I am not a fan of either of these teams, watching playoff baseball is exciting.
ReplyDeleteI read "An Amazing Journey: 100 Years in America," which is organized subject by subject, and I read "Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates," which is organized subject by subject. I enjoyed the article about the Chicago Cubs better because I found it more interesting. With the game going on tonight, I am curious to see who is predicted to win the game. The article about America, however, just seemed uninteresting and boring. It didn't grab my attention like the article about the Cubs did because I am a fan of the Cubs. I hope the Cubs win tonight!
ReplyDeleteI chose to read "Hollywoods Gender Gap" and "Little Changes in Opinions on Global Warming." In the first compare and contrast essay I read, "Hollywoods Gender Gap", I found that it is organized topic by topic. It starts off by comparing younger actors to older actors. Then its talks about the differences in the career, not only based on age, but also gender. I really enjoyed reading this because I enjoy eentertainment news. It is easy to follow and the topic is very interesting to me. In the next compare and contrast article, "Little Changes in Opinions on Global Warming", it is organized topic-by-topic. It was split up based on the changing views of global warming. From there, it is split up by the opinion differences. It could be confusing to follow at times because of all the varying opinions. Overall, I enjoyed reading the entertainment story much more. It was easier to follow and the topic itself already sparked my interest.
ReplyDeleteI read "Little Change in Opinions about Global Warming" and "Cubs vs. Pirates". The article about global warming is written in a point by point format and each paragraph addresses the heading above it while including statistics gathered via surveys on the beliefs of Democrats and Republicans. I liked how this was organized because it wouldn't have made much sense structurally to have a huge Democrat paragraph and a huge Republican paragraph about their beliefs on the topics. The Cubs article is structured in a subject by subject format because it is talking about the wild card game tonight. It addresses the topic and discusses it from view of the Pirates and the Cubs. I enjoyed the Cubs article more because it is more relevant at the moment. Though Arrieta has been lights out, I don't think its fair to rule out the Pirates. Just looking back on recent playoff history you would see that Clayton who over the past two seasons had sub 2 era's was shelled by the Cardinals. Even though the Pirates aren't the Cardinals I would still say they are capable of winning.
ReplyDeleteI read "An amazing Journey: 100 years in America" and the article comparing the top 5 scholarship search engines. The scholarship article was organized subject-by-subject, with each site being graded on timeliness, if it is private or not, and it's uniqueness. "An amazing Journey" was organized point-by-point, describing the apartments, the people, and the atmosphere of the street in separate paragraphs. I enjoyed the scholarship article more. Part of the reason I enjoyed it more was the fact that it is relevant to me right now as I am trying to find out how best to proceed with applying and preparing for college. It also had a hint of humor to all of the lines, especially the last line when talking about uniqueness and it said "your scholarship search will be led by a talking monkey. 'Nuff said." This makes the article more interesting and less of a serious evaluation of the different sites. The other article just seemed more about the information than the presentation and it doesn't apply to me as I don't live in New York now or in the 1900's so why should I care about how it has changed.
ReplyDeleteAn Amazing Journey: 100 Years in America is Subject by Subject. I am not going to lie it was hard to figure out if it was point by point or subject by subject for me at least. I didn’t like reading it all that much. To be honest I didn’t think I was going to enjoy either of them that much but I thought that one would be more enjoyable than the one about Global Warming. The second one I read was Compare 5 Top Scholarship Search Engines. This one was organized subject by subject. I enjoyed reading this one a lot more, because it related to me more. Also it was split up in an easy way to understand the article, whereas the other article was more like a story and was very wordy in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteThe two articles I read were, “Hollywood Gender Gap”, and “Little Change in Opinions about Global Warming”. The gender gap article was organized point-by-point, Wilson compares the men and women roles side by side so that you can see the drastic gap, rather than separating it by the two genders. The global warming article was also written point-by-point. Overall it talked about how drastically people's views on global warming have been changing, it included observations, and statistics to compare the two viewpoints. I enjoyed the global warming article better than the Hollywood article. Mostly because I felt that the global warming topic affects me more personally rather than the gender gap issue. I also enjoy it more because it has more statistics and evidence to back up it's too viewpoints. It also shows how the viewpoints have changed over time, while the Hollywood article was strictly about now and how women are not getting the same amount of movies as the age. Overall I just thought that the global warming article was more interesting and impacting to my personal life.
ReplyDeleteThe first article that I read was An Amazing Journey 100 Years in America and the second article that I read was the Chicago Cubs vs. The Pittsburgh Pirates. I found both of these articles to not only be well written but every interesting. I loved the style that Amazing Journey had, especially the parts where we learned about the individual aspects of Manhattan's transformation. It is because of these points that makes this article a topic by topic essay. In the other essay, "Chicago Cubs vs. The Pittsburgh Pirates" I love how the author breaks down both teams to their pitchers, batters, and even more. I really enjoyed reading the thoroughness of the essay. As a reader I felt that the topic by topic approach really allowed me to visualize both teams strengths and weaknesses even though I don't know anything about baseball. All in all I thought that both of these essays were really interesting and offered a great deal of insight into their respective topics.

ReplyDeleteThe article “Little Change in Opinions about Global Warming” discusses how people’s views on the matter of global warming have not changed very much at all in the past few years. For the most part, those who believed in global warming, continued to believe in it, whereas those who did not believe in it, proceeded to call it a hoax. The percent of people that do believe in it, though by only a small amount, has gone down rather than up. This article and the graphs were written point by point. It always stays on the subject of global warming but it makes many different points about it. The article “Compare 5 Top College Search Engines” is organized subject by subject because there are different search engines being compared. The search engines are the subjects. I enjoyed the first article more because I have always been concerned with environmental issues. It was interesting to know that it is becoming a less popular idea. The second article, though useful, was not very interesting.
ReplyDeleteNice job going in depth with your analysis. I didn't like the little change in opinions about global warming because they just compared opinions over the years... and opinions don't seem like concrete stepping blocks to lean on. Reading an article on opinions isn't my favorite, but I'm glad you liked it.
DeleteI read "A difference in opinion about global warming" and I disliked it. It is organized point by point, showing how two different groups of people had a difference of opinion on each subject. I'm glad they have a difference of opinion, but frankly I don't care about percents.
ReplyDeleteThe second article I read was about the Hollywood gender gap. I found this very interesting as it showed the difference between the acting careers of men and women in two simple graphs which were easy to understand. This article discusses topics point by point. I definitely enjoyed the second article more because of its non-boring way of conveying information and also introducing different information to the reader. The first article only stated that there was a difference of opinion that changed over the years about different topics... which is a very general and dry topic for me.
I totally agree with you Preston. It is a lot more fun to read about a topic when it is one more relevant to you and two is shown to you in a more interesting way. Unless you are a math geek all the time, no one really cares about percents. People would rather see pictures that are explained to them.
DeleteI read An Amazing Journey: 100 Years in America found it to be a very interesting story that is organized topic-by-topic. This story compares and contrasts the daily life a citizen who lives in New York: 100 years ago versus now in modern time. It is eye-opening to how life has changed throughout the years. On the other hand, I also read Compare 5 Top Scholarship Search Engines. I really enjoyed reading this because it provided me a ton of information about each individual search engine. It was organized subject-by-subject, which was easy to follow through. Comparing both of the articles, I truly enjoyed reading about the Scholarship Search Engines more since the tone was more humorous and I could follow through very easily. Although both article provided a lot of information, it was little tough to follow through with An Amazing Journey: 100 Years in America.
ReplyDeleteI read ¨An Amazing Journey: 100 Years in America¨ and ¨Hollywood´s Glaring Gender Gap¨ The first article was organized in a point-by-point way. The article describes various aspects of New York City from 1900 and today. The author introduces a topic, such as physical appearance of the specific part of the city he is addressing, and then describes the city from both time periods before moving onto the next topic. The second article, which explains the gender gap that is very apparent in Hollywood, also uses a point-by-point style. The author writes about the realities of movie roles for both men and women in various categories. The charts are also point-by-point, as they show a certain trend for men and women on the same graph. I liked the first article, ¨An Amazing Journey¨ better than the article on gender gap. I thought the topic was intriguing and it was interesting to read about the similarities and differences our country today has to our country 100 years ago. I also thought it was better organized and more easily understood than the other article because it directly compared/contrasted the two subjects much more throughout.

ReplyDeleteThe first article I read was the 100 years of America. This article contained a more point-by-point comparison of an inhabitant of New York in 1900 to one in 2000-today. The comparison contrasted much due to technological revolution but claimed that the one thing that never changed was the vibe of life in the big city. The second article I read described College scholarship search engines in a subject-by-subject format. It looked into five of the best engines and then at how timely each was updated, whether it was private with your information or not, and then finally what made it stand out or be unique. Of the two articles, I enjoyed the second more due to the relevance it brings to my life and the overall style being basically facts for me to review. The first brought more of an artistic flare in its basis for comparison that I had relatively no interest in to begin with particularly because it didn't relate to me in any way.
ReplyDeleteIf it's point-by-point then what would each point be because I could not identify them myself. Also since there are multiply paragraphs in a row about the family 100 years ago how could it be point-by-point?
DeleteThe two stories I read were "An Amazing Journey: 100 Years in America" and "Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates". They were both organized with topic by topic. The first story was harder to determine though. This is because the essay was more focused on the story of the family that lived there 100 years ago. The other story was clear as day. It was comparing pitchers on both teams. It gave the same kind of stats for both pitchers. I favorite article was the one about the Cubs and Pirates. This is because it is way more relevant in my life. Also it is just more interesting for me to read about sports than the history of a street in New York.
ReplyDeleteI read "Little Changes in Opinions of Global Warming" and it was organized point by point. It would talk about a view on global warming then explain how different groups opinions on that subject have changed over the years. I also read "Compare 5 Top Scholarship Search Engines" which was organized by subject by subject. It would mention a search engine then describe how timely, private and unique it is before bringing up the next search engine. I enjoyed "Little Change in Opinions on Global Warming" more because it felt more supported then "Compare 5 Top Scholarship Search Engines" which seemed to use research into the search engines to describe their quality, rather then gathering their own information.
ReplyDeleteI read "An Amazing Journey: 100 Years in America" and "Hollywood Gender Gap". In "An Amazing Journey", it is organized subject-by-subject. It compares how life was like for a family that lived there in the 1900s to a family who lived there more recently. It starts off by explaining how New York was like when the first family lived there to how New York is when the more recent family interviewed in the article is there. In "Hollywood Gender Gap" it is organized as a topic-by-topic story. It starts off by explaining the gender gap a little bit then moves on to the points of sexism and methodology and how those have to do with the gender gap. I personally thought the Hollywood article was more interesting just because I wasn't expecting women to get less roles after age thirty and men to get more roles after the age of forty-six. I also liked how the article had graphs to look at and Emma Watson's "He for She" speech.
ReplyDeleteI read "An Amazing Journey: 100 years in America" from category one and "Hollywood Gender Gap" from category two. Both were set up in a point-by-point style. The first article talked about the different parts of the city and described them in both time periods and then moved onto a different part of the city in another paragraph. I preferred the article "Hollywood Gender Gap" because it was just a much more interesting topic to me and I like the use of graphs to support their points. The author of the article talked about the difference in opportunities for male and female actors at different ages. I thought this article was really interesting because I never really realized how young the women actresses always were and how the men always seemed to be older. It totally makes sense now but I never even put any thought to it before.
